Abstract

This article will take an in-depth look at The Rehearsal (HBO, 2022-present), a series created, starring, written and produced by comedian Nathan Fielder. Considered by critics as the best series of 2022, this study will examine what are the main characteristics that constitute it and make it stand out from current television production. To this end, this article will be built around four fundamental axes: to study the television antecedents that influence The Rehearsal, to analyse the complexity of the series based on Jason Mittell's (2006) theoretical assumptions, to establish what boundaries the series draws between reality and fiction, and, finally, to reflect on the ethical controversy that The Rehearsal raises. All this will determine how Fielder generates a critical gaze in the spectator not only towards the media, but also towards the hegemonic truths that prevail in Postmodernity.

Mittell, J. [@jmittell] (2022, 5 de agosto). Just caught up with your excellent piece on Nathan's pepper. I'd add a bit more: he hides rather than removes it because as director/overseer of this staged world, it's all about visual & emotional verisimilitude: what we see is what is real.
