The technological and social transformation brought about by the transition from the "Gutenberg galaxy" to the "Internet galaxy" is affecting knowledge in positive and negative ways. Although progress has been made in centralized democracy and social justice, social misinformation is profuse and the possibility of a technological accident that affects us globally has also been established. In the geographic scope of Latin America, the evolution of technological infrastructures has allowed the development of business and labor dynamics, cultural management and consumption, as well as electronic democracy, with the implementation of the digital government and electronic voting. However, more problematic issues arise, such as electronic surveillance, crime and digital harassment, new processes of capital concentration and accumulation, or intra- and international technological imbalances. In this framework, despite its thematic diversification, scientific progress in the area of communication encounters the difficulty of achieving a significant theoretical reformulation that involves digital transformation, currently anchored to a mediocentric and technocentric conception.
