Abstract

This research essay analyzes the underlying communication model behind the construction of reality carried out by artificial intelligence systems based on algorithms that act at the service of surveillance capitalism as mass media. Algorithms build different realities within the current cybernetic framework, but what is the reality of the reality’s construction of the algorithms used by surveillance capitalism? From an ethnographic look at the algorithms of Facebook and Twitter, a new interactive and persuasive algorithmic communication model is proposed in which the algorithms generate different levels of reality, with a hidden purpose of manipulation and behavioral modification, as is the case of social experiments carried out by Facebook, the Cambridge Analytica scandal or the social credit systems established in some countries.
