The text is a reflection on the diversity of approaches in gender studies and its innovative impact on communication issues (from the American functionalist sociology to critical theory of the Frankfurt School, French structuralist movement, or the British Cultural Studies). In order to do so we will follow Mattelart’s own personal experiences and academic research in France and Chile. As she illustrates, those experience underline the political relevance of gender representations in contemporary societies, and how these representations are used to articulate social relationships and to establish the meaning of experience.
