Evolution of the concept of foreigner in the Spanish press from a legal and journalistic perspective. The case of ABC as a descriptive model

This research aims to evaluate the journalistic treatment of foreigners in the Spanish press in order to advocate journalistic specialization as an academic response to the Right to Information and Public Communication. The starting hypothesis is that the mass media, in a traditional way, have not had the presence of journalists specialized in the scope of foreigners. As a consequence of this, the coverage of the phenomenon has evolved according to the political-economic situation, which has led to an irresponsibility on the part of the media to contribute to the formation of the concept "immigrant" as a mere commodified product. Regarding the methodology, this research has been carried out with the tool content analysis in a selection of more than 1000 ABC publications from 1985 to 2016, with reference to the Law of Foreign and we have proceeded to treat in a statistical way the recorded data, which have parameters of journalistic and legal content. The conclusions assume an evaluation of the journalistic activity, the determination of the evolution of the concept of foreigners and the responsibility derived from the mass media in the formation of the collective imaginary of the society with respect to the concept of immigrant. Likewise, it is reflected how "the other" is nothing more than a product available to the reception country.Downloads
